WHAT I LEARNED FROM MOSES AND THE ORPHANS OF KENYA

Do ever experience moments when a seemingly insignificant action or item suddenly triggers a memory of something that happened years in the past? This happened to me some days ago as I was putting on my warm boots to go outside.

But before I tell you this memory that came to me, I need to preface it with a bit of explanation. I tell you this story not to evoke some emotional response from you, but simply to make a point. What is more, when I tell you this little memory, I know it will be one to which most, if not all of you, will be able to relate in some way. I know you will be able to relate to it because many of you here grew up in this area during the same general time as did I.

When we were growing up, Northern Wisconsin was not a wealthy area. It still is not, of course, but for you younger people and for those who have moved here, it is much different today than it was in the 1960’s. In 1964, as part of what then President Lyndon Johnson’s called “The War on Poverty,” Price County, Wisconsin was named one of the poorest counties in the United States.

Most of us who grew up here grew up in very humble circumstances. Interestingly however, probably none of us realized it. Our neighbors lived in the same conditions that we did. In our farming communities, we always had plenty of food to eat. We grew up happy. President Johnson may have said that we were poor, but we just laughed at that notion.

But in retrospect, we probably were poor. At that young age, I was unaware of the struggles that my parents may have had financially. I did not know what they talked about after all of us kids were in bed. I do not know of their worries and concerns. I do remember that my dad painted the back-seat windows of our 1955 Dodge Coronet, because of some loophole in the Wisconsin DOT laws, the sedan then qualified as a pickup truck. In that way dad could license it as a “farm truck,” and save maybe five or ten dollars every year.

Faith Peter: Found in the street in 2017 as a 7 year-old girl, now age 12

Faith was a child of a single mother called Jane.  This woman Jane gave birth to Faith at the Nyamache Market center where she was living in a rental house. Faith stayed with her mother until the untimely death of her mother from heart attack.

The area chief of Nyamache location adopted this young girl faith to his family in the year 2015 and 2016. But due to severe mistreatment from the chief’s children, Faith made her way to the street where she struggled with life for two months before we met her during evangelism. She came to the market where we were preaching the gospel and we thought that she was insane because she was extremely dirty with worn-out clothes!! 

We later realized that she was a street girl and she came to request us that we may support her with buying her clothes and food. We were very much touched with her situation and we felt that being a girl should get a safe place to stay. Eventually, we adopted her in the orphanage.

Faith behaves very well and she is a good girl. She is thanking God for saving her from the street life and she is grateful for being provided with her needs through the donations from Pastor Donald and the Log church USA. Every day in our prayer schedule, Faith has to pray before we end the session. She has a passion to be a gospel artist, she likes singing very much.

 

Damackline Ongwano: Found in the street in 2028 as a 9 year-old girl, now age 13

Damackline’s grandmother was not married, but had a one child known as Nyakerario (the mother of Damackline). When Nyakerario was grown, she got married, but years later her husband died.

The family of Nyakerario’s husband did not recognize Nyakerario and her  daughter Damakline because as it turned out, Nyakerario had been a second wife to him. But Nyakerario did not know of her co-wife until the death of the husband since the first wife lived some distance away.

Nyakerario and her daughter Damackline were not accepted to be part of the polygamous family and they were denied this right and access to this family.

The distraught Nyakerario left her daughter on the street in the year 2016 and disappeared. Until this time, she her whereabouts is unknown.

We met Damackline in the streets in the year 2017, being miserable. Her health was deteriorating because of street challenges. After evangelism we came back home leaving Damackline in the street, but two days later we meet as church leaders and revisited this girl in the street. We went with some food and clothes and by good luck we met her.

She was very much excited to see us, and she ran from a distance to greet us. That day we made up our minds to include Damackline in the orphanage and trusted God to strengthen her health.

She is now very okay by the grace of God. Damackline is extremely thankful for protection and care she receives through Pastor Donald and the church of Kenya. Damackline always refers the orphanage as “wonderful home.” God bless pastor Donald and log church for your generous support to our orphanage Kenya. She has a desire to be a gospel artist after school.

Kwamboka Ruth: Girl found in the street in 2019 when she was 6 years old. Now 10

Kwamboka’s mother was homeless and she was raised by a friend who took her to school until from 2 when she received earlier pregnancy and dropped out of school giving birth to Kwamboka. This caused her to be chased out of this home and she got married and stayed in a rental house until she gave birth to Kwamboka.

Her marital life lasted for 5 years and later her husband disappeared, leaving her with this kid Kwamboka. The mother of Kwamboka struggled with hard life of being jobless for 3 years until one morning when she threw Kwamboka in Nyamasege Street after selling house properties and went to unknown place.

Kwamboka joined other street children and continued to stay with them having some hopes of feeding from left overs and begging food from strangers. One day this kid Kwamboka saw us from a distance as we were carrying our bibles to evangelism at Riteke Village. She ran to us and requested for prayers leaving other street children behind. Her prayer item was to get saved and God to touch her mother that she could come for her in the street.

Information from close neighbors was that Kwamboka’s mother had said several times that because of hardship of life she will poison her daughter Kwamboka and disappear so that she can be flexible and at least be free from struggles of taking care of Kwamboka! For a long time she said this until one morning when she managed to throw her daughter in this street!!

We prayed for this kid and she was in love with one of our orphanage kid who accompanied us by the name Harite. This kid Harite cried when we wanted to leave Kwamboka after praying for her!!! And Kwamboka also was following us behind not ready to leave us!! Our orphanage kid Harite was crying while begging us to adopt Kwamboka to the orphanage. We were eventually overwhelmed with sympathy and allowed Kwamboka to go with us, and after evangelism it was evening time and we brought her in the orphanage facility.

Kwamboka was helpless in the street but now she has somewhere to belong, she is very thankful to Harite who caused us to give her access to the orphanage and she is also thankful for the support from Pastor Donald Log church USA and love in the church to continue sending help and God bless everyone who gives financial support to our orphanage.

She likes drawing and she has a passion of becoming a nurse. In church she is one of the best kids who recite memory verses. Kwamboka is requesting Pastor Donald and log orphanage to continue.

 

Mathew Kiyondi: Boy found abandoned in 2019 when he was 12 years old. Now 15

Mathew’s mother was employed as a house girl by Ogembo tea factory manager since the year 2005. In the year 2006 she was given pregnancy by a married man who worked in this factory as a watchman. When this watchman realized that this girl had conceived his pregnancy, he abruptly stopped working and disappeared with his family to avoid shame and as a means of protecting the possible separation of his family, in case his wife should find out what he had done to the house girl!! The wife of the manager where this house girl worked was good enough to contain the situation of Mathew’s mother despite the fact of getting pregnant while staying with them as a house girl.

Mathew’s mother was given humble time and was shown love until when she gave birth to Mathew in November 4th the year 2007. Mathew’s mother again came to seek for a job in the manager’s house, because she had already been misplaced from her family due to conflicts. Her family could not be traced and this also contributed for sympathy on her from the manager’s family.

She was given the job and faithfully served as a house girl until the year 2017 February when she went out for shopping in Itibo market but never returned to the working place. The manager’s wife continued to stay with her son Mathew and could support to educate him as he did from the previous years when her mother used to work there as a house girl.

Mathew being abandoned by his mother could not have peace although he was under good care. One day he left school without the knowledge of his guardians (the manager’s family) and went missing for three days. On the fourth day upon his return he explained that someone lied to him that he saw his mother at Riosiri market which is located in our neighboring county called Nyamarambe selling sugar cane. He had made up his mind to seek for her personally.

This offended the manager’s family and he was chased from  this family because of staying out of home for three days while avoiding classes and without the manager’s authority and knowledge.

From there Mathew started going around into different families searching for help but he could rarely get accommodated and given a place to sleep for only one night to vacate in the following day. This young boy went through hard times and his lifestyle was not promising.

We met him in need of help and with that big heart brought him to the orphanage. His mother is still missing nowhere to be seen. This boy had been in a hopeless situation, but now he has hope.

Mathew gives God gratitude and his best regards goes to Pastor Donald for the continuous support he received from him and the church too. Mathew likes athletics and dancing. He will use his talents for God’s glory and more especially to train others in dancing for God as a means of serving Him with his talents.

God will reward Pastor Donald and Log church for their generous giving to support us in the log orphanage. AMEN

REPORT FROM LOG CHURCH ORPHANAGE, KENYA

Below is the latest report and letter from Pastor Joel. We are all so thankful for monies

donated for the support of the orphans from many of you. It is a work that has the aspect of daily input. Food is needed every day. School costs are required so that the kids can go to school. Clothing and other living needs do not cease or take time off.

But God has been faithful and so have you. It is not that there are no times of hunger and lack of funds. Every month the orphanage goes without food for some days, but they all seem to remain so thankful.

Those with few resources are often the most thankful of people. I was reminded of this the other day when God brought to my mind something that happened when Vivian and I were first married. In those days, we had nothing. We lived from day to day.

The event that God brought to my mind seems insignificant now, but I remembered getting some new boots—ones that did not come from the second-hand shop and ones that actually kept my feet warm in the winter as I worked in the woods.

I remember being so thankful to God for those boots.

Now, I have boots and everything that I need, but I don’t know if my thankfulness has kept up with what God has given me. It seems that I was more thankful when I lacked some basic needs.

It is my intention to begin to thank God for every little thing. The children at the orphanage have taught me that.

Kemiso David: 14-year-old boy found in the street in 2018

He was born in the street, his mother was a street woman and his mother died in the year 2017. She was buried in the cemetery. So Kemiso was purely a street boy right from the time of his birth! This boy says that he can’t forget the goodness of God in the land of the living and he will live to praise God.

He has an ambition of becoming a minister of the gospel after school and his ministry will mostly be based on streets to save the vulnerable kids like him that are facing challenges as he used to, so that he can bring hope to them through the word of God like the way pastor Donald‘s team in conjunction with the leadership of Kenya have embraced his heart by providing support and good care in the orphanage.

Our good God reward pastor Donald, Log church USA, and all the friends who pray for our Log orphanage Kenya and God be gracious to all who give their donations to support us get food, clothing, medication and school fees.   

Vivian Mosoti: 9-year-old girl found in the street in 2016

Vivian’s mother lived at Itumbe town and she was a street vendor. She lived in Itembe town for 16 years and her family was not known by her neighbors. She was not married but she conceived through a boyfriend and bore Vivian her only child in the year 2014 at Getembe hospital.

In the year 2016 she unfortunately died at a fatal road accident that happened in Nyansongo when a bus they were boarding collided head on collision with a truck, leaving 7 people dead among Vivian’s mother!! Her body was buried in the cemetery. On the very burial day Vivian felt seriously sick and was rushed to Gucha level 6 hospital by an ambulance.

The same day we were also doing evangelism in the hospital premises, praying for the sick. Immediately upon   their arrival we prayed with Vivian before she was attended by the doctors on duty since the patients were more than doctors!! Surprisingly enough God made an instant miracle and she recovered in an amazing way!!

The ambulance driver told us the story of Vivian, how she felt sick with shocking news of her mother’s death and he told us that Vivian had nowhere to go since her mother was dead and her family background was not known. Then he asked one of us to kindly adopt Vivian so that we will continue to pray for her and give her comfort as servants of God so that she can have courage.

The driver was not aware that besides preaching and praying for the sick in the hospital we also have passion of children ministry. After purchasing some medicine and pain killers for Vivian, we asked the ambulance driver to take us back home with Vivian.

Vivian joined the orphanage by the grace of God. Vivian was miraculously healed and from that day she has never been sick. Vivian is grateful to have received miracle healing and she is happy to be in a great company of other kids. Vivian likes dancing in church. She has hopes of becoming a dancer that she can give God glory in service. She is very happy for the support from Pastor Donald, log church and all the friends who contribute to help.

Moureen Caleb: 8-year-old girl found in the street in 2017

Moureen is a half cast. Her father was a Luo by tribe and the mother was a Kisii by tribe. They both enjoyed marriage life together with their only daughter Mourine. The parents met and married each other while they were residing in a town behind the bus stage. They were hawkers within the stage and Siaya town at large. They enjoyed family love until the year 2013 during political clashes when the tribe of the Luos killed many Kisii people and destroyed properties that belonged to the Kisii people.

Due to these tribal clashes the parents of Moureen broke the bond of marriage and Moureen together with her mother made their way to a place here in Kisii called Omosaria Center. They stayed there until the untimely death of her mother who suffered from cervical cancer. Moureen’s mother by the name Everline Nyanchama succumbed to death at Lenmark hospital while under medication.

No one could identify the family background of Everline Nyanchama to assist in the burial of the body, not even Moureen her daughter!! The body was buried in Nyambera cemetery and Moureen was left in the hands of her class teacher known as Madam Jack. This Madam had five children and accepted to adopt Moureen too.

Months later the Madam’s children started mistreating Moureen and abusing her so much even denying her food when Madam was away from home. Moureen feared to say this to Madam because she was just adopted girl in this family! The only option she remained with is to leave this home and went to the street for four weeks and 2 days before we met her there at Nyabisiongororo Centre, terribly challenged with life.

She accompanied us to Martha’s home where evangelism was to begin that day and we discovered that she was a humble and kind girl who seriously needed help and care. After evangelism we brought Moureen to the orphanage and she is very free and happy to be here in the orphanage.

Moureen likes cleaning the church and she does it regularly. She is much excited to be in the orphanage and she is thankful to God and to Pastor Donald for love he is showing to the orphanage kids despite living in a far country and the support he sends for her and other children here in the orphanage. She is in class eight now and she desire to decorate the church when she is able after school. Thanks pastor Donald and all who donate to help us in log orphanage Kenya.
