EATING WITH SINNERS - THE LOG CHURCH SERMON, MARCH 27, 2022

One of the aspects about the life of Jesus which sometimes goes unnoticed is the fact that the people who were mostly attracted to his teachings were not the religious people of his day.

It was not those who were the most “respectable” among the religious community. Rather, it was those who were called the “ungodly ones” of their society who were predominantly drawn to what Jesus had to say.

This should be a little surprising to us, because it is just the opposite of what we might expect. In the experience of our own day, the “sinners” of our society largely tend to reject the teachings of Jesus, relegating his words as something that “church people” listen to (present modern-day spiritual equivalent words for "tax collectors" and "Pharisees").

But in fact, it was the religious people of Jesus’ day who mostly spoke against him, accusing him of everything from drunkenness to gluttony. For instance, there is one account that is found in the Bible where the Jesus had been speaking in a public place, and where he was beginning to draw a crowd that consisted mostly of people who were known as “tax gatherers” and “sinners.” These were the individuals who were basically rejected by the more religious people of the society.

The Pharisees and the scribes (the upright religious people), who were also present in the crowd, began to grumble against Jesus. They said, “This man receives sinners and eats with them” (Luke 15:2).

These religious and highly respected men certainly would not have done that! They would not be found associating with these “sinners” in any way, much less eat with them! After all, what would people think?

Although the grumbling that the Pharisees and scribes were doing was among themselves, Jesus seems to have heard what they were saying about him, since he began to address what they were murmuring about. He did this by telling three short stories.

KENYA - THOUGHTS OF SCHOOL, THOUGHTS OF FOOD

Last week was a difficult week for the orphanage. The kids spent most days without food. I have mentioned before some the difficulties we sometimes encounter in allocating the money that we receive, in that from week to week, we actually do not know if there will be anything. We rarely have any reserve, since money that we receive at the Log Church is usually sent to Kenya within a few days. Last week was one of those weeks when we did not have enough in the fund to send, and the orphanage was without food.

But even in these types of situations, I trust that God had a purpose in it all. For two of those days last week, members of the church in Kenya were able to provide something for the children to eat. They took it upon themselves to give to this need.

You may wonder why they do not do this more often, but please remember that there are difficulties in this that we do not realize. In that region of severe poverty, almost no one has enough to eat. Nearly everyone goes through days of hunger. Of course I am not there day by day, but I truly believe that all are doing what they can.

The kids are already back in school for their second term of 2022. In a normal year, they would have a month of holiday in between terms, but in this year, they are making up for lost time during 2021—the covid year.

This also means that we have no holiday from paying school fees—no time when we are able to use the money to instead buy needed items. But God is good, and he will provide.

As far as the building of the new school, this remains on hold, but we will resume that work as the Lord provides. The orphanage staff recently went to the village of Kenyenya, about 5 kilometers from the orphanage, to look at the school there. In several ways, the main building of that school is similar to the one that we have planned. Joel talks a bit about this below. Here is his letter:

WITHSTANDING THE WINDS OF TEMPTATION - THE LOG CHURCH SERMON, MARCH 20, 2022

When we think of the office of a priest, we frequently think of this person as one who lives a somewhat cloistered life, often apart from the daily living situation of most people and secluded in monasteries or rectories. This is not always the case of course, but I would like you to notice the difference between the offices of the priest as we have set up in some Christian church organizations, with that of the Great High Priest, as is mentioned in the book of Hebrews. Listen to these words:

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16).

NEHEMIAH - A STUDY IN COMPASSION: THE LOG CHURCH SERMON, MARCH 13, 2022

Nehemiah of the Old Testament actually had a pretty good life. He had a secure job in the court of the King of Persia in the then beautiful city of Susa. There, he held a distinguished position in the court as the cup-bearer to the king.

Originally, the function of a cupbearer was to taste the wine for quality before carrying it and serving it to the king, and also to test it to prevent a poisoning intended for the king. But the position grew to become more than that simple, albeit possibly deadly task.

In a case like that of Nehemiah, the cupbearer was not simply a personal servant, but also a trusted confidant and advisor. Thus, not only was it an office of great responsibility, but also one of influence and honor in the Persian Empire.

Nehemiah was liked and respected by the king and others. Certainly, all of his needs for what could be considered a “happy” life were met.

Nehemiah was Judean by descent and his ancestral family probably had come from Jerusalem, but as far as we know, Nehemiah himself had never been there. He was born in exile in Babylon, and then later moved to Susa. At the time of our introduction to him in the Old Testament, he had sufficiently ascended in favor with the foreign rulers to give him his distinguished position with the king.

From all outward circumstances, Nehemiah should have felt very fulfilled in his life. But that is not how we find him in the opening of the book that bears his name—the Old Testament book of Nehemiah. Here is his own account of his mental and emotional state at the time:

REPORT FROM KISII - MARCH 7

The kids of the orphanage are nearing the end of the first school term of this year. It began in January and will conclude at the end of March. We are thankful that God has provided again for this term, and that the other needs of the children, such as food and shelter, have also been supplied. Near the end of this term, there has been a need for footwear, and we are thankful also that we have been able to purchase several pair of croc-like shoes for them to wear.

The building of our own school has been on hold for some time now. We simply do not have the funds to continue at this time. We trust that God will provide for this need in his time. Thanks to all who contribute and to all who pray for these needs.

As you can see in Pastor Joel’s letter below, we have four students who will be finishing their secondary education at the end of this year. I asked him what plans we can have for these four graduates. You can see his answer below:

THE LOG CHURCH SERMON - MARCH 6, 2022: THE FORTY-YEAR BACKPACKING TRIP

For the past several weeks, we have been going through the seven feast celebrations given by God to Moses as the people of Israel were fleeing from lives of slavery in Egypt.

The first of these feasts was the Feast of the Passover. As you recall, at the original Passover, the blood of the Passover lamb was applied to the door frame of the Israelites on the night that they fled from their slavery. In that initial event and its subsequent memorial celebrations, we saw that the Feast of the Passover typified the blood of Jesus that was applied to our lives to free us from the slavery of sin.

Once given freedom from slavery, the Feast of the Unleavened Bread demonstrated to us the importance of ridding all vestiges of sin from our lives. This feast illustrates the beginning of the sanctification process, whereby we begin to live in newness of life.

Following that feast was the Feast of the Firstfruits. This feast is a celebration of the new life that we have in Christ. In this new life, we begin to draw our provision from Jesus. We realize that life does not come from the world, but is supplied to us by God. In this feast, we see that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus also demonstrates to us the pattern for our own lives in Him. Jesus is the “firstfruits” that show us an indication of what we should expect in our resurrected lives.
