THE NEED FOR WATER

This is how the children have fetched the water for use in the orphanage. We do have a water collection system from the roofs of the buildings, but it does not often provide enough for all of the needs.

You will notice that the water is not very clean, but we are in the final stages of being able to dig a well to get clean water.

SURGERY FOR YVONNE

Some time ago, one of our orphan children, Yvonne Nyabuto, received a small cut on her leg that did not seem to heal. The pain became so severe and persistent, and resistant to home treatment that the leaders decided that they must take Yvonne to the doctor. The doctor diagnosed her as having a severe flesh-eating bacterium and advised immediate and aggressive surgery.

She had that surgery the past Friday and is now doing much better. Please pray for quick and complete healing. Here are the words from Pastor Joel:

Praise God, We are very much delighted to let you know that through your financial support and prayers, Yvonne received a very success surgery on her right leg and we wish her quick healing. You are wonderfully transforming the lives of these precious children  in all aspects of life. Your generosity and help have been an inspiration to the church of Kenya and orphanage too. God reward your sincere efforts and commitment in serving vulnerable children. Thanks once again. Much love

EVANGELISM VAN

The Log Churches in Kenya do extensive street evangelism as well as house-to-house evangelism. Because they sometimes travel quite far in doing this, they have always had to hire transport when traveling far. Of course, this begins to become expensive, but this has been their calling.

Some months ago, while the evangelism group was in a distant village, a man who owned a small transport company was saved as a result of their visit. He was so grateful for his new life in Christ that he gave the church a mini-van for their use in traveling. It was an
astounding gift! The only problem was its engine had blown and it needed an entirely new replacement engine. The cost would be something over $3000, actually, closer to $4000.

Meanwhile, the need for food and schooling continued in the orphanage, and there was no money left for an engine replacement. But we kept this request always before the Lord.

A few weeks ago, God put this situation on the hearts of a family here in the US to meet this need. The photos show that the work is now being done on the van to help the evangelism team. Of course the van will also be helpful in the orphanage when we need to transport the children.

We are so thankful for this and the many other ways in which God is showing us His love for these people of Kisii.

MILKING TIME AT THE ORPHANAGE

Rains continue here in the US and also in Kenya, but as anyone working with livestock knows, the daily work does not stop. Our cow that has freshened gives about 3 litres of milk/day, with the calf also getting some to drink.

Praise God for opening up this learning opportunity for the kids. It seems a basic type of training, but it is a beginning. The cow shed that the carpentry class put together also looks very functional and well-made.

Please continue to pray for our simple beginnings to our vocational school. Our encouraging verse in this is the same one that we have often thought of before with other projects, which we modify to our own current project:

“Who has despised the day of small things? But the eyes of the LORD, which scan the whole earth, will rejoice when they see our beginnings.”

We work to please the Lord. We thank him for what He has provided for these kids in the past years.

FLOODING, MALARIA, WARM CLOTHING AND GUM BOOTS

We have seen much flooding in some of our southern states, but it is not only the US that is
receiving heavy rains. In Kisii Kenya, they are also experiencing very heavy rainfall accompanied by cool and damp weather.

There have been several cases of malaria at the orphanage, and because of the damp weather, the kids have been fighting poor health. But praise God, we are so thankful for His provision so that we were able to buy some new and warm clothing for the kids, plus new gum boots to make their walk to school much better.

Thank you so much for the provision, and praise the Lord for answered prayer.

MORE ABOUT THE COWS AT THE ORPHANAGE

One of the projects that we are working on in the vocational school
for the orphanage in Kenya is husbandry for cattle. We presently have 4 cows, one of which just gave birth to a bull calf.

Cows in Africa always look so malnourished to me, and I suppose that they are.

But my comparison is not fair, since I invariably compare all cows that I see to my Scottish Highland herd. Even here in the US, when I see a prize herd of Holstein cattle, they look so skinny. It looks to me like someone should feed those poor animals.

There is no pastureland for our cows at the vocational school at the orphanage, so food is scarce. Some food is purchased for them, but mostly someone daily needs to lead them out to graze on the greenery that grows on the edge of the roadways, and wherever
else there might be a blade of grass.

Milk production is one of the goals of this project. We will have to see how much milk these cows can actually produce, but there should at least be enough to put in their tea.

But it is also a learning experience, and I am excited to see how this work progresses.

SUMMARY REPORT OF THE ORPHANAGE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

From Pastor Joel:

Praise God, it is a blessing to hear from you. Surely God has been so faithful in providing the basic needs of these sweet kids over years now.

- Computer classes are in good progress. The students now attend in shifts, since there are so many children and they must share one computer. But the learning is very good. They are now divided into classes of 10 each. They are gaining new knowledge through the device.

- We are working on a work bench for carpentry and the classes will officially begin on Thursday this week.

- Tailoring class is super good and most children are eager to gain the skills of dress making as soon as possible. Also in the tailoring class, the kids must take turns with the single sewing machine that we presently have.

- Concerning finishing another room in the new building that can be used for classes, we shall send you its quotation this week. The masonry personnel is preparing the report and we shall give it to you within this week.

- We bought the beds and tomorrow when it is day light, we shall take photos inside the boys dormitory and sent them to you please.

- We really appreciate the borehole donation and waiting a go ahead of drilling it from you at a convenient time.

- Once again we are delighted to read your encouraging and lovely message and we shall be sending you photos, videos and reports in good time. Yes I will assign one of our pastors to assist in making reports ready. Thank you so much.

LIVESTOCK PROJECTS FOR THE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

Among the ways that we are working to produce food for the orphanage is by our small beginnings of a livestock program. We currently have three cows at the orphanage, one that is due to have a calf in a few weeks. As we see things right now, these will be milk cows.

I have also mentioned before our chicken program. Two of the hens recently hatched 14 eggs. Our prayer is that we can obtain an incubator so that numerous chicks can be hatched, with a plan to give at least two chickens to some members of the church to help them begin their own small flocks.

These projects serve the dual purpose of helping provide food for the children and also as a training in our vocational school for raising livestock. Besides that, with the chickens, it is our intention to help lessen the level of poverty among some of the church members.

Of course, we are also going ahead with the other aspects of the vocational school. More on those courses as time continues.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. God is good!

NEW COMPUTER FOR OUR VOCATIONAL SCHOOL!

The vocational school that we are beginning at the orphanage has been born out of necessity. Paying jobs are very difficult to find in our part of Kenya, and without some training of some kind, there is very little opportunity to progress in life.

Working for a dollar a day picking tea leaves is about the only thing.

The beginnings of our school may seem rudimentary to some, but we do what God has given us to do with what he has supplied. I have written about the carpentry tools and the tailoring machine that we have purchased. These will be helpful to some of the kids who have an interest and ability in these.

We are so thankful that God has also provided for us to purchase a computer. I was surprised to learn that the kids receive no computer training or even typing, even up through high school.

This new computer will be vital to training for everyone since there are many teaching programs can be accessed without having to purchase expensive books and other materials.

Plus, it will teach the kids how to type! Of course, it is a different culture in Kenya, especially in these frontier regions, but I think that we all can understand that in the years to come, computer skills and typing skills will be essential.

We have no internet access at the orphanage, but we are now checking on available educational DVDs that can be purchased. When our family lived in Venezuela years ago, our own boys learned to type using a DVD, “Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing.” As I looked online to see if that DVD is still available, I see that there is a free download of this same program!

That’s great! As I said—no internet at the orphanage, but I am thinking that they can take the computer into a cyber café and download it on to the computer from there. There also may be other similar programs of educational material. They are checking on all of that now.

Thank you for your prayers in this, and to all who have given to make this possible. It is an exciting new phase for us!

Praise God!

OUR SMALL BEGINNINGS OF AN ORPHANAGE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

Several of our kids in the orphanage are now in the upper grades in school, with four
graduating from their secondary education earlier this year. Since these kids are without family and with no land to inherit as is customary within families in that culture, the Lord has given it to us to provide a way in which these children can earn some income to help them progress in their lives.

One of the ways that we are doing this is by making a small beginning at a vocational school. It is a small start, but significant nonetheless.

We are beginning by purchasing some carpentry tools, as some of the graduates expressed an interest in learning that skill. With the construction projects that God has given us to do in the orphanage, these kids have grown up observing how buildings are made.

We also have purchased a sewing machine, or as it is called there, a tailoring machine. As in most developing countries, the most economical clothes are not those bought off the rack in the store, but what the people make themselves. This is also a skill that will be useful for some to learn.

Please pray with us as we thank God and look to Him for guidance. I will be writing more on this in the upcoming weeks.
