BREXIT AND BIBLICAL PROPHECY

One day, after Jesus made a rather vague reference to future events, the disciples asked him a question for which they probably wanted a straight and forward answer.  They asked Jesus, “Tell us, when will these things be and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3 NAS).

It is a question that many of us still ask today. It is not so curious that we should want to ask this question. Sometimes, political and social events in the world take turns that are highly unpredictable and even upsetting. These frightening developments make us all wonder if they are perhaps harbingers of the end of the age and the return of Jesus Christ.

The disciples did not exactly get a straightforward answer to their question. What they got was instead a series of parables to help them (and us) determine the social and political atmosphere that will be present in the days leading up to the end of the age. I am not going to go through all of those parables right now, for that is a lengthy process and I have done that in other places (see the book, Watching for the Day).

There are only two statements of Jesus that I want you to take away with you today. First of all, in speaking about the social and political atmosphere in the end times, Jesus said of the initial stages, “All these things are merely the beginnings of birth pangs” (Matthew 24:8 NAS). The second statement of Jesus is one with which he concluded two of his parables, “Be on the alert, for you do not know the day [nor the hour] that your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42; 25:13). 

A New Word

As you consider these two statements of Jesus, please now consider a word that has been introduced into the English language: Brexit. Although it is a very new word in our English vocabulary, almost everyone already knows what it means. If you do not, do a quick google search on it.

In fact, if you are a Christian, and to make your search more interesting, in the search bar type: “brexit and biblical prophecy.” You will find out not only the meaning of the word, but a whole host of people who claim to be Bible teachers and who will tell you exactly how Brexit was predicted in Biblical prophecy and how it signals that Jesus is coming back very soon. Often there is a postscript saying something to the order of, “Please send me some money so that I can get this message out to millions of people!”

Then, after you have done your internet search, step back and let the words of Jesus return to your thinking. “All these things are merely the beginnings of birth pangs. Be on the alert then.”

Despite my cynicism for some of the people who claim to know exactly how Brexit fits into Biblical prophecy, I do not deny that I also believe that what is currently happening in Britain and in Europe is significant in terms of events surrounding the question that the disciples asked Jesus, “What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” (To continue reading, please click the READ MORE button below)

THE DEMONIAC

In Luke chapter 8, we have the unusual story of a demonized man who was living in the tombs of a cemetery in the land of Gerasenes. This was a man who was driven by the demons within him. The man was obviously mad. He went around naked, and in some ways terrorized the people of the city. The townspeople had tried to control this demoniac, even putting him in chains and shackles and under the watch of a guard. However, apparently given tremendous strength by the demons, the man broke the chains and ran into the desert, driven there by those same demons. This apparently had happened more than once. The demons in the man (for there were more than one), seemed to have had complete control over the man, seizing him and making him to do things that the man did not want to do. 

Possession

Although I have lived in some places where it was said that there were many people who had demons, I have never seen a situation such as this one. We sometimes speak of people as being possessed by demons, and even in many Bible versions, the word used is possession. It says that the man was possessed by the demons within him. From this translation, we get the idea that the demons had ownership over the man and that he had no independence at all, or any will of his own. But possession is a strong term to use in translating this. The word that is used is actually a primary root (in Greek) that means simply “to have.”

However, perhaps even more important than the translation of the word is how we think of this situation in terms of ownership. It was the man who had the demons, not the other way around. It was the man who was in possession of the demons, not the demons who possessed the man. Although in the case of the demoniac of Gerasenes, the man seems to have been almost completely under the control of the demons, he was still the one who had ownership over his body. He still was in control of an independent will, although, for so long had he given demons reign of his actions, he had all but forgotten how to exercise his own will. But even with this, a person will always retain his ability to choose or not to choose, as clouded as that distinction may appear.

In some ways, it is not unlike a chemical addiction that some people have. These addicted ones become so dependent upon the drug that it is actually difficult to tell whom or what is in control. Our bodies can become so addicted, that to not have the chemical would mean death. In cases such as this, it would seem that the drug is the one in control.

This is a terrible situation and I am not trying to pretend that it is not sometimes extremely difficult, but despite how it may seem, the person is still the person. It is not the chemical that is the person. Our free and independent will is something given to us by God and it cannot be taken away by a demon, or a drug, or anything else. THE PHARISEE AND THE PROSTITUTE

There are many New Testament stories about the Pharisees. The reason for this is because this group of religious leaders were almost united in their opposition to Jesus. Not absolutely every Pharisee was, mind you. There were a few very notable exceptions to this. However, as a whole, the Pharisees felt threatened by Jesus. They felt threatened because they were the highly respected religious leaders of the day and were accustomed to great demonstrations of respect given to them by the people. But Jesus did not do this. Jesus held little respect for them. He considered their rigorous rules they taught that the people should follow as man-made laws, and not things that God required.

Besides this, the Pharisees felt threatened by Jesus because he had great appeal among the common people of the day – even among the non-religious people and perhaps even especially among the non-religious. That is because Jesus offered them a way out of their bondage to their lifestyle and their sin. The Pharisees did not. They offered only condemnation to the sinners. No effort of these people could be good enough.

Jesus instead offered grace to all who really did want to change. He taught that true deliverance from sin cannot come from our own efforts, but only through the grace given by God. He offered them salvation from their sinful lives.

It is because of these things that the Pharisees were constantly trying to entrap Jesus in some mistake or some false teaching. They did everything that they could to discredit him. ANDERS JOHANSSON
It was almost startling how early in the day the darkness came. The time was only about 3:30 in the afternoon, but already it was difficult for the man walking in the failing light of evening to make out the trail back to the small cabin that he was renting. In addition to the falling darkness, what made his walking even more difficult was that there was snow on the trail. The snow had been packed hard by many footprints and had become very icy.

As the man picked his way through the dark shadows of nightfall, he stumbled once on a limb that had broken off a tree and was lying in the darkness across the path. The icy trail made regaining his balance difficult, but despite his foot slipping from under him a little, he finally did manage to right himself and keep from falling all the way to the ground.

The walker was a young man of about twenty-six years old. His name was Anders Johansson. The place was in the midlands of Sweden. More specifically, it was in the province of Värmland. The year was 1876.

The darkness coming at this premature hour of the day had taken Anders almost by surprise, as if it were something out of the ordinary. But Anders knew that the early sunset should not have been unexpected. It was winter, and at these latitudes, the daylight hours were always fleeting at this time of the year.

Nevertheless, every winter Anders seemed to be taken aback by the untimely sunset. The reason that he was caught unawares by it was because of the stark contrast between the winter and the summer months. In the summer, the situation was just the reverse. The sun barely even set below the horizon in the summer, and true darkness only lasted a couple of hours. But now, in the winter, there were a mere five or six hours of daylight, making the day seem almost over as soon as it had begun.

Anders reached the front step of his humble cabin and stomped his boots to get rid of as much snow as he could before opening the door. He lived alone, so there was no warming and cheering fire waiting for him in the hearth. No smoke coming out of the chimney. The inside of the cabin would be cold. In fact, once he stepped inside, it seemed even colder inside the cabin than it did outside. It wasn’t really, but when one enters a house in the winter, almost instinctively he expects it to be warm. When it is not, the coldness seems all the more intense.

Every evening that winter, when Anders returned to his cabin and felt the coldness even inside, his thoughts returned to another winter, just a few years earlier. In this region of Sweden, that winter of the past was now remembered as “The Winter of the Great Hunger.” He had barely survived that year. Many people he knew did not. Even some of his own family had almost succumbed to the starvation of that winter.

Anders shivered inside of the cold cabin, but it was not only the temperature that made him tremble. Despite the fact that that winter of hunger was some years in the past, the memory of it still made him shudder.

Just as the early darkness caught him a bit unawares, so did these nagging and distressing remembrances of that frigid winter of starvation. Anders had not thought much about it in the winters that immediately followed it, only in that he was glad that it was over. However, this year, he was almost haunted by the memories. He did not know why those thoughts suddenly made a return, nor could he shake the visions of the past that came to him.

ELIJAH – THE EXTRAORDINARILY ORDINARY PROPHET OF GOD


Elijah’s Wirlwind

Elijah, the prophet of the Old Testament, lived a life that was one extraordinary event after another. Without introduction, Elijah appears suddenly in the pages of the Bible to stand before one of the most powerful men in the world of that day, Ahab the king of Israel. The purpose of this audience before Ahab was to pronounce a judgment against the king and his nation.

Elijah’s departure from the historical account is even more
extraordinary. He did not die but was carried away by a whirlwind into heaven. Like a Pecos Bill of the Biblical world, Elijah also “hitched a ride” on a whirlwind.
 
However, Pecos Bill was a “tall tale”.  Elijah was an actual historical figure. 

Mighty Demonstrations of Power

The life of Elijah in between his sudden entrance and just as sudden departure from the Biblical pages are almost more remarkable than were these two events. He challenged 450 prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel in order to prove that the Lord God was the true God. After waiting for these prophets of Baal to do their ranting and cutting of themselves most of the day, Elijah prayed to God to send down fire from heaven to consume the sacrificial ox that Elijah had then placed on the altar. Once God accomplished this, Elijah slew the 450 false prophets of Baal and possibly 400 additional false prophets of Asherah, who in that religion, was the consort of Baal.

Elijah wore a wide leather belt around his waist and often lived in caves. He was able to outrun a chariot and go on a journey of 40 days on the strength of a single meal. He was fed in the wilderness by ravens. He raised a boy from the dead, struck the Jordan River with his mantle to make it part so he could cross it like Moses did at the Red Sea, and twice called down fire from heaven to consume two detachments of fifty soldiers each who had come to capture him.

Elijah lived an extraordinary life. It is difficult for us to identify with many of his experiences. To us they seem too much like living a “tall tale.” Nevertheless, in the midst of all these extraordinary and uncommon experiences, there is something very common. 

Elijah’s life was not one of constant victories or of prayers that were instantly answered. His was a life of ups and downs, of delayed victories, and of covering the same spiritual territory over and over again.

I AM NOT WORTHY. I AM NOT WORTHY

Today’s topic is a difficult one for me, because there is so much about it that I do not understand. Frankly, there are many aspects about this subject that are unclear in the teachings of Scripture. The topic is that of healing and of praying for the healing of the sick.

Another reason that this is such a difficult subject is because there is so much misinformation out there in our popular culture. There are many charlatans who feed on the misfortune and desperation of those seeking healing in their lives and of the lives of family members or of friends. These pretenders make extraordinary claims of possessing gifts of healing. They make a business out of promises of healing. Because of these impostors of the truth, very many people have placed their hopes in what has turned out to be lie, and thus have also lost faith in the truth of the promises of God.

Before I actually enter into a discussion of healings, I would first like to dispose of imposters such as these, the ones whose livelihood is built upon their reputation of healers. I do this by giving two examples of such people in the New Testament.

The Charlatan Simon (from Acts 8)

The first is a man who was named Simon from the city of Samaria. He was one who had learned to practice “magic arts,” as what he did was called, and who for a long time had astonished the people of the city.

The people said of Simon, “This man is what is called the Great Power of God.” They thought him to be someone special.

During this same period, Philip was traveling around teaching about the kingdom of God and telling the people about Jesus Christ. Many in the city of Samaria believed the message that Philip brought, and were baptized. Even Simon the charlatan believed. He continued to listen to Philip’s teachings and saw some of the miracles that occurred under his ministry. The Bible does not tell us exactly what the nature of these miracles were, only that they were things that astonished the man Simon. The text says that he was “constantly amazed” by them.

Then Peter and John came to the city teach the people not only about Jesus, but also about the Holy Spirit. Philip had only baptized them in the name of Jesus, but Peter and John taught them also about the Holy Spirit. The apostles laid their hands on those who believed, so that they also would receive the Holy Spirit.

This greatly impressed Simon. He offered Peter and John money, so that he might buy this gift. He said to them, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

Peter answered him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.”

Strong words, but they demonstrate the gravity of using commerce as the motivation for claiming to use the gifts of God. If one enters into a ministry with the motive of making a good living, these words spoken by Peter also are for that person. There are other ways to make a living. Making claims in the name of Jesus to have the power to heal or to do other things are not some of these ways.

We do not know what eventually happened to Simon, but he answered Peter and John by saying, “Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” (Acts 8:9-24) 

The Pretender Sons of Sceva (from Acts 19)

Some time later with the ministry of Paul, we read of an incident where, as it is written in the text, “God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out.”

At that same time, where were some Jewish exorcists, seven sons of one Sceva, who was a chief priest of the Jews. These seven sons of the priest traveled around with their own claims of healings and the power to cast out demons from people. After seeing what was happening with Paul and hearing what he said as he spoke in the name of Jesus, they also attempted to cast out the evil spirits in the name of the Lord Jesus.

They said to one of those possessed by a demon, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

The evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”

Upon hearing this, the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them. He completely overpowered them, so that they were left fleeing from house, naked and wounded (Acts 19:11-16).

One must be careful when making claims in the name of Jesus. 

Praying for Healing

Despite the fact that there will always be those who misuse or misrepresent this gift of healing, we all do pray for healing. We pray both for ourselves and for others. We do this every Sunday in our church, and you perhaps do it every day in your homes. And we should do this. We are instructed to do this. “Pray for one another so that you may be healed,” James says (5:6).

Nevertheless, we know that not everyone that we pray for is healed in the manner that we ask. We sometimes even agonize in prayer, and yet the person is not healed. For some people who pray, this is a very troubling aspect of their faith. Some have said that they even stopped believing in God because they had prayed earnestly for someone, and that person did not recover. These people say, “If there were a God who cared about us, this person would have been healed.”

This is an extreme response, but to some degree, it is troubling to all of us when someone is not healed. We wonder why this is so. The Bible speaks so positively about healing, and never do we read in the Bible where Jesus tried to heal someone and he could not. There was however, at least one instance where the disciples tried to heal someone and were unsuccessful. They had to wait for Jesus to come and heal the person. 

The Big Picture

In viewing and speaking of sickness and disease in broad terms, we can say that these infirmities are not things that God has ever intended for us. Yet we do get sick, and we suffer in other ways. It is not as if God somehow made a mistake, but as with every other type of difficulty in our lives, the presence of sickness and disease is something that we have brought about ourselves. I do not mean this in any individual sense or specifically of someone who is suffering. I only mean it in the broad sense of the very pervasiveness of sickness in our experience.

I have spoken and written many times of the consequences of man’s rebellion against the authority of God. In the beginning, God chose to create us with free wills. He gave us the ability to choose to love him or not. This is what love is. Love can only be expressed from a free will. We can never impose upon someone to make them love us. It must be their choice.

Unfortunately, we, as a human race, chose to not love God. We did not want to recognize him as the one who created us, and therefore, as the one who has authority over us. We instead chose to be our own gods. We retained authority for ourselves. Among the devastating consequences of this choice, sickness, disease, disabilities, and a whole host of other troubles have come to us.

This is the broad picture. Regrettably, we are still living with the consequences of that former rebellion. It is a present rebellion as well, when viewed from a world-wide perspective. Most people still want to act as their own authority and decide for themselves how they should live.

However, even those of us who have repented of our rebellion against God and have again placed him in authority over our lives, even we still live in this world that continues in rebellion. We are, as it were, living in enemy territory and we must live with some of the ramifications of being here. Even though we have been redeemed by God, for this present time, God has chosen to leave us here. 

Consequences of Living in Enemy Territory

One of these ramifications of living here is that we get sick, sometimes gravely so. We also have accidents, sometimes in our cars, sometimes in our work, and also in other places. We are born with genetic weaknesses or inclination to disease, we develop cancer, we break bones, our internal organs cease to function as they should, our mind begins to become confused. We age and we die. We are living in a world and with bodies that know at least some of the consequences of living outside of the authority of God.

But then we read of the examples of healings in the Bible. We see that it is not God’s will that we should live in this way, and he offers healings to us. Nevertheless, despite these hopes of healing, it seems that it is not so simple as filling out a request form, and it is granted. None of it is so clear as that.

This disconnection between the request and the answer leads me to believe that it might be (just might be), that the healing aspect really is only secondary. To us it might seem like it is the most important thing, but there is something even more essential that God has in mind. The primary thing is that God wants to teach us something. 

New Testament Examples

The New Testament gives us many examples and tells many stories of people who had been healed. From every one of these stories, we can learn something important. Today’s story is essential, because it speaks to the very nature of sickness and of healing.

The example comes to us from the seventh chapter of Luke. There are many other examples in Scriptre as well, each with their own lessons. With today’s scripture, I will merely address one aspect of healing. Nevertheless, even though it is one aspect only, it is an important one. One might even say that it is foundational.

The example involves a Roman centurion, an officer in the Roman military of the first century. This officer had a servant that was of great value to him. By calling the servant highly valued, I do not want you to think of this in monetary terms or in terms of being “useful” to the centurion. Rather, this servant was precious to this Roman. In other places in the New Testament, this same word is used for someone who is held in a very high regard, quite apart from terms of monetary value or terms of usefulness. In simple terms, the centurion thought very highly of who this person was as an individual.

This servant, it turns out, became sick, and very gravely so. He actually had become paralyzed, according to the account in Matthew, and was at the point of death. The centurion heard that Jesus was nearby, so he asked some elders of the Jewish synagogue to go to Jesus and ask him to heal the servant.

Even though the centurion was a Gentile, the Jews were happy to do this, because this Roman was a friend to them. He had used his funds to build the synagogue for them. Jesus heard what the Jewish leaders said about the situation, and agreed to go with them and return to the house of the centurion. 

The Centurion’s Request

However, when Jesus and the others were not far from the house, the centurion saw them coming and sent some friends to Jesus with a message. His was a very interesting message and shows the depths of understanding this centurion had about the nature of sickness and disease in relationship to the sovereignty and the authority of God. The message from him was this: 

Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, “Go!” and he goes, and to another, “Come!” and he comes, and to my slave, “Do this!” and he does it. 

There are several insights that we can take away from this statement of the centurion – more than I can talk about in one sermon. However, notice that he speaks twice of worthiness. First he said that he did not consider himself worthy for Jesus to enter his house. Secondly, he said that he was not worthy enough for him personally to meet Jesus.

Although in many of our Bibles, both of these instances use the word “worthy” in their translations, the centurion actually used two different words in these cases. These two words have slightly different inflections of meanings. 

Hikanos: to reach, to attain, sufficient

When the centurion said that he was not worthy for Jesus to come under his roof, he meant it in a sense that you might expect a military man to understand. The centurion is speaking as one would when speaking of rank, as they would have in the military. It is for this reason of worthiness that a buck private does not simply walk into the office of a general and ask the general to do something for him. There is a certain decorum  and procedure that is expected when you are dealing with someone of high rank and someone with much authority. This, the centurion understood well.

John the Baptist used this same word for worthiness when he spoke of himself in comparison to Jesus. John said of Jesus, “I am not worthy even to untie the thong of his sandal” (John 2:16). John knew that he was much beneath Jesus in terms of standing, and for him to be acting in the role of conferring a blessing on Jesus was something that he had no right to do.

The centurion felt much the same way. He felt that because he was of such low rank, it would not be proper for Jesus to enter his house. We can all understand this to a certain extent, although perhaps not to the same degree. If you heard that someone that was highly respected both by society and by you personally was coming to your home, although your home be a humble one, you would do your best to tidy up. Say the king of Sweden was coming to your home to pay you a visit. There would be no dirty dishes in the sink, no cobwebs in the corner. “The king is coming and we must put our best foot forward.”

Or perhaps you would even say, as did the centurion, “Please, do not have him come here. I have a humble home, one not fit for a king to enter.”

We may feel that we are not worthy of such an honor. We can see this same sentiment in the story that Jesus told of the prodigal son. In that story, the son knew that he had acted in a way that was not worthy of how he ought to have acted. He had despised the honor of his father and had brought shame to his name. Because of this he said, “I am no longer worthy to be called your son” (Luke 15:19, 21). The son felt that he had brought shame to his standing and to his station in life. In this sense, he felt that he was not worthy to be included in a family of such high standing. 

Axioō: to deem entitled or to have earned the right (sense of weight)

The second time that the centurion uses the word “worthy,” it is in a slightly different sense. He said this, “For this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”

Perhaps none of us would expect that if we were to send a request of a personal nature to our president, that he would take the time to do an exclusive action for our benefit only. I understand that perhaps few who may read these words hold our current president in high regard personally, but being president of the United States always carries with it a certain degree of respect. Perhaps you may not feel this respect, but you should. This is an honor bestowed upon him by millions of people.

To not express this respect for one in this standing is no different than a teenager who despises his or her parents who, although they may be very terrible examples of parents, are still his parents. He may not hold them in high regard in their personal lives, but he always must respect them for their position. They are his parents.

However, in the case of the centurion, not only did this man respect Jesus for his position, but he also respected him personally. I think that the centurion believed that Jesus actually was the Son of God. Thus, when this Roman made the request of Jesus, he felt that he really had no right to do so. Actually, he would not have been surprised if Jesus had just ignored him and his petty request.

When the centurion sent word to Jesus, he said that he did not come himself to make the request because he did not consider himself worthy to appear before Jesus and speak to him. By this he meant that he did not deserve even to ask such a request of Jesus. The centurion felt timid and undeserving to do so.

How surprised he must have been when Jesus not only agreed to grant his request, but was also actually on his way to come to his own humble abode. It was more than the centurion could handle. All that he could say is, “I was not worthy to come to you and ask you to do something for me. I am not worthy for you to come into my home. I am not worthy. I am not worthy.” 

Lessons from the Roman

This is the lesson of the Roman centurion and why it is foundational in our understanding of healing.  Among the many things that we can learn about the healing of our bodies and our minds from God, perhaps the greatest is this. “We are not worthy. We are not worthy.” 

Do you think the key factor in healing is faith? …That in order to be healed, if you believe firmly enough and do not doubt, it will happen? This is also part of it and this aspect comes out in other examples of healings that we can read about in the New Testament. But Jesus said of this Gentile centurion who simply considered himself unworthy, “Not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” Jesus looked upon this attitude as having great faith. 

Making Us Worthy

The truth of the matter is, we cannot know all of the factors that are involved with healing. When someone has contracted or has developed a terrible sickness, when someone has or develops serious disabilities, we do not know all that the Lord is doing. Our perspective is so limited and we see only the present circumstances and difficulties. We do not yet see the end result of what God is bringing about.

God likens his people to precious jewels. Most jewels found in the depths of a mine do not appear there as jewels. Except for someone with a trained eye, these jewels look like most of the other stones lying around. But one who knows what to look for sees the potential that is hidden inside the rough exterior. He picks the stone up, puts it in his bag, and brings it to the surface.

However, to bring out the true beauty of the jewel, it must go through some great distress in order to bring to light that which is within. There are often saws involved, chisels, abrasives, and other tools that bring even violence to this stone that has come from the interior of the earth. But the violence done to it is not meant for harm. It is not done maliciously. Rather, it is done by the hand of a trained jewel cutter who knows how to bring out the beauty that is within.

You are a jewel of God. Those of you who love God are his jewels. You may be experiencing violence now, but you must endure and be patient. God is bringing to light something in you that you could have never imagined. Part of the beauty of this whole process is that we are not worthy of any of this. What God has in mind for each one of you is something far beyond your worthiness. He intends to bring to light all the beauty that lies within you, but is still hidden from our site. We are not worthy of such love.
